INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES; 15th MAY..
United Nations General Assembly through its resolution on September 20th, 1993 declared the 15th of May every year as International day of families. It is a global family day where families around the world celebrate the day.
The intention of the day is to increase the understanding of the economic, social and demographics issues affecting families. It is aimed at reflecting the significance of the International community according to the family as the basic unit of society as well as voicing concerns regarding the current state of affairs of the family unit around the world.
The day provides opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic, and demographics issues and wellbeing of families.
Theme for the 2024 reads ” Embracing diversity, strengthening families”
The day is celebrated amongst cultures. It is honoured through public exhibitions and discussions to deliberate on ideas that are relavant to the specific theme of the year. Tool kits are created in some countries that help communities organise celebrations targeting different sections of the population such teenagers, youth and young adults.
Other activities may include seminars and fora, visual and online discussions on policies that affect the family, it is also a day that provides opportunity for people to spend time in either their nuclear or extended families.
Jumali and MDSCF join the world of family to commemorate the day.
