WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY; 3rd May.
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY; 3rd May.
United Nations General Assembly has declared the 3rd May every year as world press freedom day. It is observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind government of their rights.
The 2024 theme for the observance is ” A press for the planet, journalism in the face of environmental crises”
This is important as it gives an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media from attack on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Activities to commemorate day include seminars and conference organized by the stakeholders, media association and groups as well as online programmes to raise awareness of the day.
Jumali as training academy and also organisation for training future careerrs in the press join the world of press to commemorate the day.
