INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD; 11th October.
Annually on this day, the 11th day in the month of October, United Nations declared it as International Day of the Girl Child. It is also known as the International Day of Girls. It is aimed at promoting girls empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights. It is also to highlight the challenges faced by the girls the world over.
Focus of the day as spelt out by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) include among others; education, child marriage, access to services regrading puberty and sexual health and addressing issues around gender-based violence and e.t.c.
Stakeholders on this day organise series of
events to commemorate the day which may range from marches, special events such as concerts and sporting events.
The day observance started in 2012, the year supports more opportunity for the girls and increase awareness for the girls. The day reflects the successful emergence of girls and young women as district cohort in development policy, programing and research.
Social media uses the hashtag #dayofthegirl to track events and news about the day.
Jumali and MDSCF youths organization join the world over to commemorate the day.
