INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION; 13th October.
Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The days observance started in the year 1989 after a call by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for a day to promote a global culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction.
On 2019, the UNGA in its resolution A/RES/64/200 officially designated 13th of October to commemorate the day and since then it became an annual observance by all the UN member Nations.
The day is a chance to recognize the progress made in addressing vulnerability to disaster and the loss of lives, economic and health.
Theme of this year 2022 will focus on target G of the sendal framework ; “Sustainability increase the availability of an access to multi-hazard early warning system and disaster risk information and assessment to people by 2030”.
INGOs, NGOs,
Civil Society Organizations, and other corporate Organization including government agencies working on disaster management, risk reduction, and other related issues, organise a sensitization awareness campaign program to the public about the day.
There are four (4) other
important thematic areas the day is trying to address viz;
Disaster prevention and mitigation.
Disaster preparedness.
Disaster responses and
Disaster Rehabilitation and recovery.
The day will celebrate how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disaster and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risk that they face.
