INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE TROPICS; 29th June.
Today is observed as International day of the tropics. It is a United Nations declared day to commemorate the tropics and it’s impact to the world of weather and climate
Tropics also known as tropical areas are areas that lie between 0 to 23 and half degree North and 23 and half degree South of the imaginary lines of latitude on the world globe. They represent areas where sun is constantly overhead throughout the year. These overheads of the sun brings about changes peculiar to the tropics.
There two types of tropics, the tropic of cancer 23 and half degree from the north and tropic of Capricorn 23 and half degree from the south of the world globe.
There are peculiar and uniqueness of the tropics that brings about changes of the season as either winter season from the tropic of Capricorn in the southern part of the world or summer season from the tropics of cancer in the northern parts of the world.
The tropics also experience the length of the day and night which varies. There is longer day shorter night or shorter day longer night.
Our world is divided by an imaginary line into two equal part; North and South by a line called 0 degree or the Equator. It is this Equator that gave rise to the lines of tropics.
Tropics are important in the world of Geography, government and all organizations working on weather and climate as it affects the social, cultural, economic and political well-being of the individual, group and the entire world communities.
To mark the day, seminars and symposium, visual and on-line programmes are organized by stakeholders in the field of weather and climate especially now that alot are happening in the tropics as relates to changes in world climate.
