INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY; 17th OCTOBER.
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY; 17th OCTOBER.
Today, the 17th day of October is observed as International Day For the eradication of Poverty. The day is marked to renew commitment and show solidarity to poor.
The day is traced back to 17th October, 1987 where over hundred thousand people gathered at the Tracadero in Paris where the Universal declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that Poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins are gathered every year on this day to renew their commitment.
Jumali and MDSCF commemorate with the world over in the observance of the day.
