INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER, 16 TH SEPTEMBER.
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER, 16 TH SEPTEMBER.
Ozone is a colourless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odour and powerful oxidizing properties formed from oxygen by electrical discharges or ultraviolet light.
On the other hand,
Ozone layer is a layer in the earth’s stratosphere at an altitude of about 10km (6.2miles) containing a high concentration of ozone, which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun.
Today is observed as International Day For the presentations of the ozone layer. It is an annually observed day by all United Nations member state.
The day was aimed at countries coming together to address issues related to ozone and ozone layer depletion so as to discuss and fine-tune it’s related consequences.
Ozone layer is known to provide a protective cover to the upper atmosphere which protects life on the earth from ultraviolet radiation.
On this Agencies, both Government and Non Governmental Organizations as well as Civil Societies Organisations involved in the climatic programs and other related atmospheric conditions come together in an organized gathering to sensitize the general public on the importance of this day especially now that we facing serious challenges on climate changes worldwide viz-a-viz increasing temperature, raise in the atmospheric pressure, decreased in the ocean floor among other implications of the ozone layer.
Schools programs in both secondary and tertiary institutions organize seminars and quizzes specifically clubs and associations of conservation actively participate in the days programs.
Jumali Teen Leadership Academy join the world over to commemorate with the day.
