WORLD DAY OF COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT. 17TH JUNE.
WORLD DAY OF COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT. 17TH JUNE.
Every year on this day the 17th of June is observed as World Day of Combat desertification and drought. It is a United Nations declared day.
What do we mean by the two terms, Desertification and Drought;
Desertification refers to persistent degradations of dry land ecosystem by climatic variation and human activities. This occurs in all the continent except Antarctica, and it affects the livelihoods of millions of people
Drought on the other hand means a period of drier-than-normal condition that results in water related problems also means an event of prolonged shortage in water supply, weather atmospheric, surface water etc.
The day tries to promote public awareness to combat desertification and the effects of drought.
Activities for the day include outreach programs being organised by Civil Societies Organisations (CSOs), International Non Governmental Organizations(INGOs) within and outside, and other stake holders aimed at enlightening the general public . This is aimed and targeted at as a reminder for everybody that desertification can be effectively tackled, that solutions are possible and that key tools to this aim lay in strengthened community participation and co-operation at all levels. Schools are also encouraged to form associations on conserving and fighting desertification and drought.
Each year, a theme is drawn going by the current situation at hand.
Jumali and MDSCF joined the Civil Societies around the world to observe the day.
