NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY DAY, JUNE 12.
Today June 12 is observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria which replaces the former democracy day which was 29th May. It is held annually to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was initially May 29. This is the second time June 12 is being observed. As the Democracy Day since it was declared . It is a national public holiday in Nigeria . The Buhari led administration declared the new democracy day to commemorate the Democratic election of MKO Abiola on June 12 1993, in what was adjudged to be Nigeria’s freest and fairest election.
The day marks the end of military rule and this brought about a new era of regular elections as well as the return of civil liberties, free press and an end to arbitrary arrests and torture,
Different activities are held to mark the day at state and national levels all aimed at celebrating the day by the political actors, government in power, Civil Societies Organizations and NGOs working on democracy and Good governance.
We at Jumali in partnership with MDSCF join the teeming Nigeria population to rejoice with the government on the occasion of this day.
