INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY ; 2nd December.
Abolition simply means the act of abolishing, or the state of being abolished, an annulling, abrogation, utter, destruction.
Slavery on the other hand means; An institution or social practices of owning human being, a property, especially for use as force labourers. Also defined as condition of servitude endured by a slave. Or is a condition in which one is captivated or subjugated, as by greed or drug.
Today 2nd of December is observed as International Day for the abolition of Slavery. It is annually observed day in most countries of the world.
The day is aimed at raising awareness on the atrocities of modern slavery. It is an oppurtunity to share their perspective in writings through poetry, opinion pieces, interviews, features articles, short stories and other published materials. In school and institutions of learning like Classrooms they may review the history of slave trade, its evolution and changes it has undergone through up to the modern times. Students may also learn about the negative impacts of slavery on society. Activities like online print and broadcast media promote the day through news, debates, forums, and talks about modern day slave trade and why it is a serious human rights issues. Political leaders, including senators, political office holders and those with ministerial responsibilities also take the time to urge the public to work together in eradicating any form of slavery in modern society. Flyers, posters, leaflets, newsletters about abolishing slavery and slave trade are also distributed throughout universities and in a public arenas. on this day. Theme are normally designed each year capturing the menance. “No one shall be held in slavery or survitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
NGOs, CSOs and Government agencies join hands in fighting this menance. Some have tried and are still trying, Victims of such slave and slavery and its alied include women, girls of teenage age Jumali in partnership with MDSCF join the world over to coommemorate the day and also add their voices to raise awareness on the abolition of slavery.
