WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY, 14th June.
World Blood Donor Day is one of of the Eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The day is observed annually to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.
Transfusion of blood and blood products helps to save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life threatening conditions to live longer with higher quality of life, this also supports complex medical and surgical procedures. It also has an essential, life-saving roles in meternal and perinatal care. Access to safe and sufficient blood products can help reduce rates of death and disabilty due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. There are emergency demands for blood especially those in the war front and battle field and those in accident and emergencies where the blood are highly needed.
Activities commemorating the day include among others; public lectures, sensitization seminars, out-reach program. Tents and pavilions are erected where donors volunteer to be tested and if found to be healthy can donate one ortwo pints of blood. Some health facilities on this announces the day and make a provision for volunteers who are willing to donate .
Jumali in partnership with MDSCF join the world over to commemorate the day and call the general public to donate generously atleast a pint to save life.
