INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY. 15th Sept. Today is observed as the International Day of Democracy abbreviated as IDD. It is aimed at creating awareness to the public to know the values as well as the essential elements of Democracy. The day provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world, as it is seen in the definition given by its founder; to mean; “the government of the people by the people and for the people”. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international comnunity, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideals of democracy be made into reality that would be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. Essential elements of democracy that people all over need to know and understand could be seen in the values of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage. The Importance provided by the democracy could be said: to provide the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. The essential elements and the values of democracy are all embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and further developed in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which are enshrined in a host of political rights and civil liberties underpinning meaningful democracies. We at Jumali Leadership Training Academy, in partnership with MDSCF joins the world over on the commemoration of this day and we look forward for more of its dividend as the world has shifed to democratic rule. Happy Internationall day of democracy. From JTSLTA/MDSCF.
