INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE VICTIM OF ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCE, 30th August. This day was established to commemorates with the victims of Enforced Disappearances. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness on the wide range of enforced or voluntary disappearances that occur to people all over the world, including “arrest, detention, abduction or any other form of deprivation of liberty by agents of the state or by persons or groups of persons acting with authorization, support of the state, followed by a refusal to acknowladge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared person, which places such a person outside the protection of the law” The day also allows states to consider the fulfillment of their obligations under the International Convention for the protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. Jumali in partnership with MDSCF commemorate with the public and the world over on this day and call on the state actors in observing the International Convention which places several duties and obligations upon them to effect the convention, some of which include taking appropraite measures in investigation and prosecution of the crimes and ensuring justice for the victims, so as to discourage furtherance of such atrocities.
