This day is set aside for education in earth science which will provide humankind with tools for the sustainable use of natural resources and building the scientific infrastracture essential for sustainable development. The day also tends to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations so as to promote harmony with nature and the earth.
